China at Trans Musicales Festival

China at Trans Musicales Festival

In 2017, the French Institute carries on with its partnership with “Spectacle vivant en Bretagne” (Live show in Brittany) in order to develop French-Chinese professional exchange about music during the Glaz Music meeting.

Glaz Music was created by the Trans Musicales Encounters Festival, Bars en Trans Festival, No Border Festival, the French Institute, the French Embassy in China, the Export Bureau, Spectacle vivant en Bretagne and sixteen other organizations that are specialized in music. It was created in order to discover new talents and to initiate a dialogue between foreign professionals.

Several Chinese music professionals will participate to this event thanks to the Embassy’s support.

Zhang Ran, Modernsky international affairs director and founder of the forum Sound of the Xity.

Jef Vreys,  New Noise director/ concerts promotor

Dalong LI, Mao Livehouse network’s CEO

Rico Zhang, PPTV’s music channel director

The Chinese group Cosmic Project is invited to play to the Trans Musicales Festival thanks to the support of the French Institute in China. The band is rather new but is formed by two experienced musicians, Zhu Boxuan (Nova Heart’s guitar player) and Yanlo. They will come to France along with a small production team so that their trip can be shared as a documentary film on several Chinese streaming platforms (LeTV et Tencent Music). The documentary film aims to introduce the Trans Musicales Music Festival, Rennes and their meetings with French musicians to the Chinese audience.

Once they will be back from France, Boxuan and Yanlo will attend to radio broadcasts in order to talk about the Music Fetsival, the city of Rennes and French musicians that they like. The Chinese audience will also be able to follow their trip on LeMusic and Tencent Music’s Weibo and Weixin.

The fact that those professional musicians are able to come to the Festival allows French and Chinese audiences to come closer together and to deepen the partnerships between the French and Chinese music industry.

What is Glaz Music ?

They encourage the mobility of Brittany’s professional artists engaged in performing arts and we promote the dissemination of their performances in France and abroad. Glaz Music (www.spectacle-vivant-bretagne.fr/activite/28/) promotes the richness of Brittany’s artists and the value of a group action in performing arts.

Inspired by Indian live music experience, the Future Sound of London and 60s psychedelic music movement, the sound of Cosmic Project consists of minimalism electro music, psychedelic music and Far East world music. After a series of theatrical and art exhibition work, Cosmic Project is developing an unique artistic path by creating live music experience in Chinese theatre and art scene.

Sitar musician Zhu(Boxuan) is one of the most active artist in Chinese indie music scene. As a multi-instrumentalist, he always bring an unique charisma to the musical performance.  His world music journey started when he learnt ZhongRuan (an ancient instrument brought to China from Mid-East in 115 BC) from master Zhao Yue. After an encounter with Indian classic music, Zhu was sent to Indian twice to find the perfect Sitar and learn from different schools and masters. He has studied with Rishab Rikhiram and later he followed Uma Shankar, one of the best student of Sitar guru Debu chaudhuri.

Zhu met synthesizer maniac Yanlo in Berlin and immediately became music partner in the summer of 2016. Yanlo had finished his documentary work at several music festivals in Europe and was traveling around to collect work materials for his personal exhibition.

Influenced by Japanese musician Ryuichi Sakamoto,Shigeru Umebayashi and HongKong music duo TatMingPair, Yanlo’s passion for synthesizer is enormous. Zhu and Yanlo spent a summer together, going to different dance clubs and trying to find their favorite sound at the live shows.

The live set of Cosmic Project is joined by British musicians Dan Taylor, Chinese musician Si Yunge and Li Younai. The first EP and music videos will be released in China and Europe this Autumn, followed with a tour in China and France.
