Exhibition | Iraq, Yazidi Women in the Hell of Daesh

Exhibition | Iraq, Yazidi Women in the Hell of Daesh

By Johanna de Tessières

The International Day of Human Rights on December 10th will be a chance to draw attention via the lens of Johanna Tessières to the fate of the Yazidi women who have fled the hell of Islamic State in northern Iraq. A French photojournalist working on humanitarian and human rights issues, Johanna Tessières regularly publishes in both Libre Belgique and the international press. She also collaborates with NGOs such as Handicap International and Amnesty International, and is particularly known for her coverage of Congolese victims of sexual abuse in North Kivu.

In this exceptional series, Tessières captures the daily life of the non-Muslim minority Yazidis women persecuted by Daesh. Unable to return to their villages, where access is no longer possible or whose infrastructure has been destroyed, many of the survivors now reside in camps for displaced people in Iraqi Kurdistan.

This photo exhibition underlines both the essential role of the press and our unremitting duty to defend it by highlighting these serious affronts to human dignity throughout the world. The realism of the photography returns us to the humanity of these women, as well as to the courage and fraternal spirit that unites them. It also reminds us of the universality of women's rights and the importance of respecting their freedom and diversity.
