Special screening | Last Laugh by Zhang Tao

In a village in Shandong, an old peasant woman takes a fall. Her children immediately take the opportunity to declare her incapable and commit her to a hospice, against her will. While waiting for a place to become free, the old lady stays with each of her children in turn, none of whom wants to take her in.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the director Zhang Tao.

Zhang Tao is a Chinese director, screenwriter and actor from Shandong province. A farmer’s son, he first studied law while also pursuing a career as a civil servant, which he quickly abandoned in order to recount in film modern China and its transformations. He joined the prestigious Central Academy of Drama in Beijing, graduating in 2015. During his studies, he made two noteworthy short films: Yi Ping and Laughing to Die. Last laugh is his first feature, and was selected in the ACID section at the 2017 Cannes Festival.
