Ma Jun, environnementalist, ambassador of Franco-Chinese Month of Environment

Selected by the Times in 2006 as one of the top 100 ‘global thinkers' and well-known for his book China's Water Crisis, Ma Jun is one of China's leading environmentalists.

Director of the Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs, he directs the first public database on the environmental performance of companies in China. His commitment on data transparency and pollution mapping was awarded by the Golman Prize, a prestigious environmental award, in 2012. These data are currently available on the mobile app Bluesky Plan which indicates the quality of water, air, and emissions of enterprises to the general public in real time.

In 2015, he won the Skoll Foundation awards for social entrepreneurship for his involvement in the Green Choice Alliance, a coalition of consumer groups that encourages companies to use a global green supply chain.

Environmental humanities: A challenge for social sciences

The relationship between man and nature is an intriguing topic that has been pondered and discussed by generations of Chinese over the past 2500 years, since the age of ancient philosophers of Lao Tzu, Confucius and Chuang Tzu. However, modern Chinese recognition of the relationship has been greatly influnced by western schools of philosophy.

Today, facing a daunting environmental challenge, China has decided to pivot its efforts to build an ‘Eco-Civilization’. I believe Professor Quenet’s original analysis on new forms of co-existence between humans and non-humans would be particularly relevant and enlightening to China’s on-going green exploration.
