Liberty Leading the Yarn

Liberty Leading the Yarn

An installation by Jérémy Gobé for the Hangzhou Triennial of Fibre Art

The artist Jérémy Gobé’s original creation, Liberty Leading The Yarn, is an industrial-scale, organically shaped installation inspired by the famous, exquisite Jacquard fabric range. The artist’s aim is to draw attention on this emblematic fabric whose industrial production no longer exists in France.Relocating the productions and the techniques also implies to multiply transportations. It affects the environment and the local economy by defying the nature preservation standards.  The balance between production and pollution is broken. Through the prism of this industrial example, the contemporary neologism Ecolonomy (ecology and economy) takes on its full meaning.
So-named in reference to Eugene Delacroix's 1830 masterpiece, Liberty Leading the People, the installation, which shows the contrast between form and context, highlights the collapse of textile production in France and the accompanying loss of artisanal skill. Closing factories mirror a deteriorating nature: what are their place in our societies? How can we begin to integrate them afresh? In other words, is it possible for us to initiate a virtuous circle?

Moving between drawing, sculpture and textile work, Jérémy Gobé’s installations are marked by their poetry. The artist draws his inspiration from found objects: construction materials or off-cut fabrics, into which he breathes a second life. A graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in 2011, Jérémy Gobé has won numerous awards. A finalist in the Prix Coal Océan, in partnership with the Tara Expeditions and Agnès B, he was also nominated for an IDF Award – a prestigious international contemporary design prize.
