Cinema Goes Green

Cinema Goes Green

Making the general public aware of environmental issues is a highly appropriate role for the cinema! Several directors have risen to the task, with success. For the Franco-Chinese Month of the Environment, the Chinese public is invited to discover and marvel at a French filmography that is rich in landscapes, flora and fauna.

Viewers will be able to travel across the globe while admiring Yann-Arthus Bertrand’s breath-taking camerawork in such films as Terra, Planet Ocean, Home, A Thirsty World, Human, and Mediterranean.  The preservation of marine ecosystems will be highlighted with Tara Oceans movie: Journey to the sources of life. Tara Oceans. Things remain seriously cold as viewers are invited to head for the clouds in Frozen Planet – a documentary series shot from the rooftops of the world: the Himalayas and the Alps. And we haven’t forgotten about the children, for whom an initiation into nature and our sense of wonder is provided by such cartoons as Mia and the Migoo, My Darling Little Planet by Jacques-Rémy Girerd, Once Upon a Forest, by Luc Jacquet, or Amazonia by Thierry Ragobert.

Cinema and the environment in China

French environmental cinema has strong links with China. The Chinese public have marvelled in great numbers at the work of famous directors headed by such figures as Jacques Perrin, Thierry Ragobert, Luc Jacquet, Yann Arthus-Bertrand and Nicolas Vannier.  For instance, 2013 was marked by the release of Jacques Perrin’s Ocean in smaller Chinese theatres, to unanticipated commercial success. This French presence was enhanced in 2014 with release of Amazonia in 3D on cinema screens across China. And the release of Seasons at the end of September 2016 will surely carry on the tradition.
