2016 Jimei × Arles International Photo Festival

Launched late last year in Xiamen—the result of collaboration between the renowned French photography festival, “Arles Festival” directed by Sam Stourdzé, and Beijing’s Three Shadows Photography Art Centre directed by photographer RongRong and inri—the second “Jimei -Arles Photography Festival” is no doubt an exciting development in the world of Chinese photography. This ambitious festival presents more than 30 exhibitions and 1000 artworks.

Among main projects, there are the 8 exhibitions selected during the 47th edition of Arles festival last Summer: Toilet Paper with artists Maurizio Cattelan & Pierpaolo Ferrari, Scary Monsters! An Off-Beat Look into Monsters in Cinema created by: Marc Atallah and Frédéric Jaccaud, The Jungle Show created and curated by Yann Gross, Western from Camargue curated by Estelle Rouquette & Sam Stourdzé, Arles Discovery Award, and Arles Book Awards.

The other main projects include numerous exhibitions presented under the umbrella of Asian Pulse, Jimei - Arles Discovery Award , Local Action, Mika Ninagawa Solo Exhibition, Photo Insight, Collector’s Tale, Crossover Photography, as well as Photo Book fair. The opening week was rhythmed by seminars, projections and professional meeting with Photo Folio Review.

Among the most the Not to Miss events: Vintage photography 1850-1949; Toilet Paper that present iconic photos from the eponym magazine created in 2010 by contemporary artist Maurizio Cattelan and photographer Pierpaolo Ferrari; the Charles Jin’s collection that reveals favorites photography of the director of Sipa Press Agency; the works of Mika Ninagawa with its attractive colors; the great selection of young Chinese photographers made by well-known curators in the field that echoes an energetic generation of artist. The Jimei-Arles Award celebrates this year the artwork of Liu Silin, who will have the chance to exhibit in Arles in France next Summer.
