Serge Gainsbourg, photographs by Tony Frank

Serge Gainsbourg, photographs by Tony Frank

To pay homage –twenty-five years after his death– to the career of singer Serge Gainsbourg and to the memory he left in several generations’ mind, the exhibition follows him through his path with both private and public pictures, taken by the photographer Tony Frank who has been close to him from the beginning of his career in the 1960s to his death.

Few singers in France are as revered as Serge Gainsbourg, who, with his in turn provocative or poetic lyrics and his constant experimentations, through a wide array of musical genres–from jazz to funk, from reggae to pop music–deeply influenced French songwriters.
To pay homage–twenty-five years after his death–to his work and to the memory he left in our minds, the exhibition follows him through his path with intimate pictures that have become classics, so iconic was Gainsbourg’s style, immortalized by Tony Frank who photographed him throughout his career.
Next to well-known pictures (such as the album cover of Histoire de Mélody Nelson, made by Tony Frank in 1971) the visitor will find several previously unpublished photographs, of a more intimate style, such as those that show him with Jane Birkin, who was his partner for twelve years and is the mother of their daughter Charlotte Gainsbourg. These images were exhibited for the first time in a tribute exhibition at the Galerie de l’Instant in Paris in 2016.

Tony Frank is one of the most famous photographers of stars in France. Among those that have posed for him are artists as diverse as Bob Dylan, Françoise Hardy, Mick Jagger, Ike & Tina Turner, Renaud and James Brown. He helped create the famous music magazine Salut les Copains, and worked for the Sygma agency, Paris-Match and Gala. He also designed numerous album covers. Tony Frank now works as an independent photographer.
