Albert Palma|Perceived before Perception

Painter Albert Palma's exhibition at Xin Dong Cheng Space for Contemporary Art

Albert Palma's work explores the boundary between the abstract and the figurative. The shapes created - landscapes in undefined spaces, geometric patterns – suit a meditative viewing, and his work has been praised by contemporary philosophers and writers including Pascal Quignard, Henry Bauchau and Jean-Luc Nancy. Inks, paintings and engravings display his trademark features and the precision of his gestures recall Palma’s passion for Shintaido, the martial art he studied in Japan with Master Aoki Hiroyuki. His work can be read, according to cartoonist Moebius, as “the cartography of energy”. A selection of Palma's work will be exhibited for the first time in China at the Xin Dong Cheng Space for Contemporary Art.

The painter Albert Palma is an author of philosophical essays as well as a master of martial arts, a practice into which he was initiated during a ten year stay in Japan, by the founder of Shintaido. In his pictorial work, as in his practice of the art of saber, he has worked to perfect the gesture and is said to have wanted to "find the essence that would sum up all others."
