The Beginning of Love

The Beginning of Love

Directed by Pascal Rambert, with Mi Le and Shao Sifan

Following the success of the Chinese version of Love’s End, the director Pascal Rambert presents The Beginning of Love with two Chinese actors. Drawing on his own experiences, Rambert has written about the unique and extremely personal moments surrounding the beginning of a relationship. The Beginning of Love is a poem for two voices – one in Paris, and the other in New York – whose scenes flow to the rhythms of a language filled with musicality.

Author's note

I wrote Le Début de l'A. in Paris in August 2000. I rarely write in Paris. But this, I wrote in Paris. In the heat of Paris in the month of August. Alone. And without the woman I loved. For real. We had just finished a beautiful and challenging project together, L'Epopée de Gilgamesh for the Avignon Festival. She was a member of the American team and once the festival finished, had returned to New York. My body and my mind, just like at the end of every play, were devastated. It was in this poverty that I wrote. And I didn’t hide anything. Everything is true. Everything I tell is true. Except the accident at the end which sees us die. But it is all true. I didn’t think to give the characters names: they are called as we are. I didn’t hide anything. I just listened to what I lacked. I retranscribed my thoughts. I looked inside myself. Everyday I had silent conversation with my beloved. I closed the shutters in broad daylight and sharpened my teeth. The story I tell is the unique moment when love takes off and we hope it will never stop. The moment when everything begins.
