Hans Hartung

Hans Hartung

The exhibition in Nanjing parallels the works of Hartung and local artist Zhu Ming who is part of the first generation of Chinese abstract artists. We discover different paths to abstraction via an appreciation of their cultural differences.

hans Hartung (born September 21, 1904, Leipzig, died December 7, 1989, Antibes) was a French painter of German origin, one of the greatest representatives of abstract art and father of tachism. Persecuted by the Nazis, he joined the Foreign Legion in North Africa and lost a leg in combat. Becoming a French citizen in 1945, his first individual exhibition dates back to 1947. In 1960 he gained international recognition by winning the Grand Prize at the Venice Biennale.
