Interview

Can you tell us about your links to China? Do you come here often?

Joyce Jonathan : I've been coming to China since I was 11 years old. The first time was to accompany my mum on one of her business trips. She set up a tourist agency in France based on China travel, and is responsible for giving me a taste and curiosity for the country. She enrolled my two sisters and me in a French school where we could learn Mandarin and I learnt my first words at the age of 13. A few years later, in 2010, when my first album was released in France, Warner Taiwan contacted me to release my album in the country. I jumped at the opportunity to do it and recorded my first songs translated into Mandarin. From then on, I came to China regularly, several times a year, for concerts and shows such as the Chinese New Year gala.

What is your best memory of China?

Joyce Jonathan : Singing at the Olympic Water Cube in 2012 at Beijing TV’s Chinese New Year Gala. It was the first time I took part in such a spectacular show. I felt tiny standing on a huge podium that rose as I sang. I sang one song from my album in French and another song in half French and half Chinese, surrounded by dancers in crazy costumes. The show was broadcast on BTV in front of more than 350 million viewers.

You are about to release your first album sung exclusively in Chinese and tour China. Can you tell us a little more?

Joyce Jonathan : Yes, I am very excited to come in May for a series of concerts and to release my first album sung all in Chinese. The album consists of translated versions of previous albums that I sang this time in Chinese, as well as other unreleased tracks, such as a duet with the Chinese singer Qu Wanting and one with Asian artist Anggun.

What have been your best encounters in China?

Joyce Jonathan :When I last came here, for a show in December 2016, I met Cui Jian in the corridor. We exchanged a few words and swapped records. He is a singer I admire a lot for his musical style, simplicity and melodic strengths. I decided to make a cover of his song Greenhouse girl, which was originally sung in Chinese. I translated it in French, and cannot wait to sing it when I come in May!
