Groups and fashions pass, some remain and last the course. Magma has been around since 1970 playing original music free from clichés; violent, virtuoso and without parallel.
Christian Vander, drummer and founder of the group, first played under the direction of Elvin Jones, with influences as eclectic as John Coltrane, Igor Stavinsky, Barl and Carl Orff.
A rigorous musician and fiercely demanding, his playing and singing are hypnotic and open the way to a powerful and implacably polyrhythmic music. Musicians he played with at the time are today big names in contemporary music: Jannick Top, Claude Engel, Didier Lockwood... Like a Miles Davis, Vander is a great developer of talent.
His provocative and eclectic attitude and vocal originality has earned him many unfair judgements. And yet his music is still around, independent and untameable.
Since the reforming of the group in 1995, they have toured continuously and the public have turned up in greater numbers than ever and are getting younger! New York, Tokyo, London, Mexico, Moscow vibrate to this cult group’s music. Today, three generations of aficionados jostle at the entrance to their concerts which are almost always... sold out!
Magma will celebrate its 45th birthday in 2015 with two new opuses and one tour... certainly its last.
