‘When we were on tour in China in 2014, we were particularly touched by the Art of Calligraphy, whether the ephemeral work of art of an old man who paints the characters on the ground with water to maintain his balance and flexibility, or the female artists who tell of their modernity through this secular art. ’
‘From our feelings that emerged before this ambivalent art, between respect for certain codes and the calligrapher’s personal style, came our desire to create a multi-faceted project: ‘Madeleine et Salomon’. Our aim, beyond musical genres, is to transcribe the calligrapher’s different strokes with which he translates his feeling, through the whisper of the melody’.
The first part of the project: In women’s eyes, is an audio-visual work which is an arrangement of extracts from American protest singers who used song to convey personal expression on their femininity and the society in which they lived. Like an echo of the present to the past, the repertoire is enriched by original compositions and improvisations on images from short surrealist films projected live and created for the occasion.
