User, Body and Digital Media, Kevin Lesur & Aaajiao’s masterclass

On the occasion of the Body Media II exhibition at the Power Station of Arts, Kevin Lesur, member of the French collective One Life Remains, and Aaajiao, the online handle of Xu Wenkai, a Shanghai- and Berlin-based artist, will give a conference on Body and video games. They will tackle the issues of the user, the body and digital media.

“Video game is often seen as a media of the image and is often filiated with cinema.

But if no hand is interacting with the gamepad, keyboard or other controler, the screen stays still. While it is the hand that is generally interacting with a video game, it is in fact the whole body that is engaged in an experience of play.

Once we start to see video game this way, it becomes possible to create links with dance, music and performing arts in general. From this position, we can think game experiences that will engage the body in a genuine way.

It also becomes possible to highlight the player’s performance by putting his body on stage and give the audience a way to appreciate the choreography of his movements.

For instance, in Les disciplines du rectangle, a person entering the installation space will either an empty space with white boxes or see people taking strange postures, moving their body in an unconventionnal way. At this moment, this person doesn’t know these people are playing a game and she doesn’t need for an aesthetic performance to happen. The interaction between the game and the players produces a singular choreography that in itself strikes the audience. On the other side, if she comes in the space while nobody is playing, nothing will happen until she is caught by one of the cameras and asked to join this peculiar dance.

The lecture will discuss this relation between video game and body.”
