Plug-in City | Photography by Alain Bublex

The former industrial designer Alain Bublex uses photography as a means to present the audience with unrealized urbanism projects, turning them at once into fodder for the imagination and a basis for debate.

His “Plug-in City” series, started in 2009, is a futuristic and humoristic reinterpretation of a utopian project imagined in 1964 by the architect Peter Cook.

The vision of the founder of the Archigram agency was that of the city as an organism, extendable and moving, in which neighborhoods and houses could be plugged in and unplugged according to the needs of the community. Through the use of computer-generated images, Alain Bublex illustrates the project, designed in such a way as to solve the housing crisis. His series shows ultra-modern cities, a gigantic urban framework on which “Movable Units of Habitation” (MUH) are grafted.

The sense of urgency and rapid change arises from scenes of helicopters carrying various parts of the mutating city. Whereas Peter Cook thought of the project as a real solution, Alain Bublex’s remake remains a fictional model, which allows him to explore our ambivalent attitudes to change and the idea of utopia, far from the pressures of production.
