Conference | The challenges of the management of water in the city, by Brice Lalonde

Water concerns all of us. Covering 70% of the surface of our planet, it is essential for the survival of every living thing.

Yet the resource is becoming increasingly scarce due to a combination of global warming and increasing needs, especially in cities that are constantly growing. Can we imagine a city without water? Do we necessarily think of water management when we talk about urban space, living together, and public health? What new urban models are engaged in integrating this resource? It is essential that the cities of the world adapt in order to find innovative and sustainable solutions that meet the needs of urban dwellers.

Talking about urban water means also talking about disasters caused by climate change: rising water levels and heavy rain. How do decision-makers take these kinds of extreme weather events into consideration in their urban developmental and management strategies? In view of its vitality, its importance to the economy and its unequal distribution on earth, the control of water is a subject of strong geopolitical stakes. What are the challenges of climate change for the water sector and how can good decision-making help neutralize its adverse effects? Brice Lalonde, former Minister of the Environment, Special Advisor on Sustainable Development at the UN and President of the Water Academy, will shed light on these issues at conferences in Beijing, Chongqing and Shenyang.

Brice Lalonde is the President of the Water Academy and was the Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations. He was the executive co-ordinator of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio +20), and after serving as French Ambassador, he was responsible for international negotiations on climate change between 2007-2011. From 1988-1992, he was France's Minister of the Environment.
