A vivid portrait of my city

A vivid portrait of my city

The objective of the project of this artist-in-residence program is to show a “realistic and subjective portrait” of the city, combining the collective aspect – urban landscapes –, the individual aspect – the drawing of the participant and his or her portrait painted by the artist–, and an interaction between the participant and his or her city.

There will be 4 steps to this project. During the first step, participants will meet each other at the Alliance française. Those interested will explain to Marc Goldstain how to get from their home to the Alliance française and map out the route on an A3 sheet of paper.
During the second step, Marc will paint a portrait of each participant, who will pose for fifteen minutes to one hour. The third step begins with Marc painting a poetic version of a Chinese city map large enough so that the students, teachers and visitors of the Alliance française can stick post-it notes with their names on their place of residence. For the fourth and final step, i.e. the exhibition, Marc will bring four of his paintings of Paris and the chosen Chinese city.
This project provides an art residency and a rich and diverse exhibition, connecting the French and Chinese worlds. The maps drawn by the Chinese participants will be shown above their portraits and feature next to their urban landscapes.
