Cinema goes green

Cinema goes green

Picture : Once upon a Forest, Luc Jacquet, 2013

As part of the Franco-Chinese Month of the Environment, a selection of six French films on the environment will travel to Beijing, Zhengzhou, Dalian, Hangzhou and Chengdu.

From the most popular to the most independent, from contemporary to classic, and from animation to fiction to documentary, French cinema is full of films related to the city, sea, land, air and forests. Take flight to distant cinematic horizons with Yellowbird. From air to sea, follow the famous ship of Commander Cousteau in Jerome Salle’s Odyssey, starring Lambert Wilson, Audrey Tautou and Pierre Niney. The maritime journey continues with Swedish documentary Brise-Glace by Jean Rouch. Paul Grimault’s The King and the Mockingbird must have inspired Hayao Miyazaki as he tells the story of our friends the trees over the centuries in Once Upon a Forest. Finally, the sensation of Cannes Festival in 2016, Aquarius plunges us into the heart of Brazil’s city Recife to tell a story of rapid urban change. A rich selection, reflecting the diversity of French environmental films.

Thanks to the support of China New Youth Cinemas, these films on the environment will be made available to a large student population. 23 cinemas in universities in 18 cities will show these films. This marks the first time that China New Youth Cinemas is working with a foreign embassy.

This film series will also be screened at Poly International Cinema Tian'anmen, in the renovated Qianmen District; a cultural hub where modernity blends with the charm of traditional buildings preserved from Beijing's urban transformation.
