SONSARA ENCHANTS SHANGHAI MINSHENG MUSEUM | CELESTE BOURSIER-MOUGENOT

Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum is honored to introduce the French artist Céleste Boursier-Mougenot’s first solo exhibition in China: “Sonsara”. The exhibition will take place from 1st September to 12th November 2017.

The title of the exhibition, “Sonsara”, is a combined concept made up of “Son” and “Samsara”. “Son” means “sound” in French, that is to say the auditory effect that can be sensed through the ear. Samsara means the cycle of life. The meaning of this word includes mankind’s past life and the eternal life after death. Finally, Sonsara is not only the endless life and continuous sound, but also a metaphor of the spiral exhibition site. Thus, combining imagination and contemplation, Sonsara questions the relation between humans and the artificial nature, but also the idea of the world after humans and the relation between human and non-human beings. The exhibition is composed by light, fog, rock, sand, water, and birds, in a variety of ways to show the vitality of the sound. As China is a country with a long history of ecological thinking and this exhibition falls within the positive and continuing desire to encourage ecological reflection and action in a globalized conte

Born in Nice in 1961, Céleste Bousier-Mougenot is a French artist widely exposed and acknowledged at the international scale. After training for a musical career at the National Music Conservatory of Nice, he became the composer of the stage director Pascal Rambert’s “Side One Posthume Theatre” company, from the 1980s to the 1990s. In 1994, he started to create his own sound installations. In 2010, the artist was nominated for the prestigious Marcel Duchamp Prize, and he represented France at the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015. At the same time, his exhibition Acquaalta turned the space of the Palais de Tokyo (Paris) into a lake and invited the audience to feel all the changes from this tactile, visual and auditory experience. Céleste Bousier-Mougenot’s others important exhibitions include very famous international cultural institutions such as the Centre Pompidou of Metz (2015), the Musée des Beaux-Arts of Montréal (2016), or the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2017).

Sun Qidong is the curator of the “Sonsara” exhibition and works for Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum. He is involved in multiple activities in which he questions the creation of contemporary art but also more specific subjects such as the relation between art and economy, or the role of the artist as an entrepreneur. As a curator, he organized Sonsara: Céleste Boursier-Mougenot, Secret Garden: Nathalie Djurberg& Hans Berg, Do you wanna play with me and Non-figurative. In addition, he has participated in initiating the art project Invisible Elephant, as well as in publishing the theoretical journal ZAZA.
