Dialogue between Tan Dun and Jean Nouvel on cities

The 16th of september of 2017 in Shanghai, the exceptionnal meeting between the French architect Jean Nouvel (Pritzker Award 2008) and the Chinese composer and conductor Tan Dun will inaugurate the Franco-Chinese Month of the Environment (MFCE).

The opening ceremony of the Franco-Chinese Month of the Environment 2017 gathers two exceptional creators: the prominent French architect Jean Nouvel, Pritzker Award 2008, and the outstanding Chinese composer Tan Dun. Beyond the subtle relationship between music and architecture, both draw their inspiration in the city and in its relation with nature. They will share their respective visions of current and future changes undergone by the cities during the last thirty years in China and other parts of the world, in respect to major environmental challenges. This unique dialogue will be included in the SEA-Hi! public lectures series launched by Shanghai Planning and Land Resource Administration Bureau and Shanghai Urban Planning and Design Research Institute.

Born in 1945, the French architect Jean Nouvel received the prestigious Pritzker award in 2008. Founder of the Ateliers Jean Nouvel in 1994, he has established himself as one of the major architects of the 21st century, thanks to impressive works such as the Institut du Monde Arabe, the Quai Branly Museum, the Philharmonie de Paris, or Abou Dhabi’s Louvre. He currently works on several large-scale projects in China, including the design and construction of the National Art Museum of China (NAMOC).

The Shanghai based composer and conductor Tan Dun has led the world’s most esteemed orchestras, (London Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Berliner Philharmoniker…) and been awarded with today’s most prestigious honors (Grammy Award, Oscar/Acad­emy Award…). He composed the soundtrack of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and was “Cultural Ambassador to the World” for World Exhibition in Shanghai (2010). He is one of UNE­SCO’s current global Goodwill Ambassador.
