Personal exhibition by Lionel Sabatté
To pay tribute to the Chinese calendar, and the year 2015 - the Year of the Goat - Lionel Sabatté presents his work, revealing a poetic dialogue born of French and Chinese cultures.
The exhibited works are the result of when the artist visited China in 2010 and 2014, a cultural meeting, but one that was also both sensitive and physical.
In this way, the sculptures take shape from tea and ancient Chinese coins. These herbivorous achievements made from plant material raise the question of boundary outlines between container and content.
The exhibition also presents paintings on canvas that combine experimentation with the phantasmagorical, giving rise to animals that align themselves both with natural and mythical criteria. All of these creatures come from the abyssal depths, to the limit of abstraction; they are alive but unknown.
Strongly linked to the forces of nature and to the animal and vegetable world, but also to men and spirits, Lionel Sabatté is constantly interacting with this material. A multidisciplinary practice allows him to exercise a sensitive approach to life, pondering on the mutation of things and the evanescence of form.
Lionel Sabatté graduated from the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts of Paris (ENSAP) in 2003. He lives and works in Paris.
