Cinema-concert | Etudes sur Paris

Cinema-concert | Etudes sur Paris

A film by André Sauvage (1928) musically accompanied by the chamber musical quarter Chu Yi-Bing Cello Ensemble

Regarded as André Sauvage’s masterpiece, and released in 1928, Etudes sur Paris conveys the urban poetry of the French Surrealists and captures Paris inhabitants and monuments with a powerful visual sensitivity. Using his camera as the key instrument of his artistic conscience, Sauvage achieves pictorial demonstration with a certain touch of humor.
Unprecedented urban portrait, Etudes sur Paris is a lyrical tour of Paris during the Roaring Twenties. Pioneer of the artistic documentary, André Sauvage captures with great visual sensitivity the effervescence of the city, the landmarks and popular neighborhoods of a changing capital.

For the Franco-Chinese Month of the Environment, the French Embassy in China and the Temple Hotel invite the cellist Chu Yi-bing and its quartet to accompany this magical film.

Close to Max Jacob, André Gide, Jean Cocteau, Man Ray, the Prévert brothers and Jean Renoir, passionate traveler André Sauvage quickly became famous for its realisations, literary writing, and paintings that he makes according to the landscape or people he meets. Today forgotten by most cinema-lovers, he ended his career after the spoliation of images he made for a documentary demanded by André Citroen in 1931 on the Central Asia expedition.

Chinese cellist who won the First Prize at the Paris Music National Conservatory in 1987, Chu Yi-Bing participated in spreading western music in China. After living as a professional musician in Europe for 21 years, he comes back to China and teaches at the Beijing central music conservatory, formed the Chu Yi-Bing Cello and created the Super Cello international festival dedicated to cello.
